Sexual Health Clinic Interpreting
Sexual health involves understanding one’s own body, a partner’s body, and all of the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects involved with intimacy. It is another level of intimacy when a patient has one or more persons in the exam room, discussing their sexual health concerns. It is critical for ASL interpreters to use a trauma-informed and inclusive approach in their work. By utilizing key ingredients of trauma-informed awareness, Deaf and Hard of Hearing consumers are more likely to have a better sexual health care experience and feel empowered and motivated to take care of their sexual health. Services include contraception, hormone therapy, treatment of sexually transmitted infections and menopause, and unplanned pregnancies will be reviewed and discussed. This workshop will provide interpreters an opportunity to build skills through an experiential learning environment.
